Varicella-zoster, VZV the chickenpox virus will stay in a dormant state in the body after an individual has chickenpox condition. This will occupy the roots of sensory nerves and occurs in about one in five people previously infected with chickenpox. The virus starts to reactivate after a childhood chickenpox infection. The time of the herpes virus attack may be 15-20 years after chickenpox attack. In case this virus is reactivated and causes shingles. This resulting virus is usually referred to as herpes zoster virus. After reactivation, the herpes zoster virus travels along a sensory nerve into the skin and causes shingles. Majority of people who get shingles are above the age of 60.
The word shingles is derived from the Latin and French words for belt or girdle. This is because of the distribution of this rash in a single broad band. This area is normally on one side of the body in most of shingle cases. It denotes a dermatome- the area that a single sensory nerve supplies in the skin. Painful area may occupy part or all of the dermatome. Majority of people have one or more risk factors but factors that cause shingles are common for everybody. A person who has had the chickenpox infection or chickenpox vaccine at an early age may carry the herpes zoster virus that will develop shingles at a later stage.
Elderly people who have a reduced ability to fight against infection due to stress or immune deficiency have more chances of getting shingles.
